For
nearly 70 years, Jose Malgor & Co.,Inc. has been successfully
feeding the tastes of an expanding market in Puerto Rico with
quality specialty food products.
Founded
in 1926, the company started as an importer of dried beans and cod
fish, two staples of The Puerto Rican diet. Working out of a small warehouse in
Old San Juan, the company’s founder quickly began to build a
distribution network through the grocery stores that were the main
outlets for food products at the time. Soon the business built a
reputation as “la casa del bacalao y las habichuelas” the house
of beans and cod fish, a distinction it still holds today
Since
then, however, the house of beans and cod fish has grown and
expanded to become a premier importer, packager and distributor of
specialty food products, catering to the particular tastes of the
Puerto Rican market. More than 70 food items, grace the shelves and
freezers of the island’s major supermarkets and food chains.
José Malgor has grown from a business employing 10 workers when its current chairman of the
board, Pedro Martinez,Sr.first
started in 1952, to a company that employees more than 50 people
with annual sales of over $15 million. Its warehouse space has
grown from a few thousand square feet in Old San Juan to more tan
35,000 square feet in a complex at the capital city’s primary
port area, with modern refrigerated storage capacity.
